"The White Snake" is  a world premier of an adaption of a Chinese legend adapted and directed by Tony award winner Mary Zimmerman.

The entire set is BAMBOO!!!!  We used real bamboo in some areas, such as the walls, and even painted it to look more real than it tended to under lights.  We also made dimensional fake bamboo in others areas, such as the front of the stage.

The floor, though, was a flat surface painted to look like dimensional bamboo, since it would be treacherous for our actors to walk on real (slippery) bamboo.

Here's a great shot of our technique.

The floor was simply thinly routed masonite wich we based and glazed, then we treated each individual knuckle.

To the left is only a fraction of the floor.

It took a looooooong time, but it was a fun project-  and now I think I could paint bamboo in my sleep!
